Purpose
All organizations maintain their own nomenclature. In order to bridge the gap that exists between the source data we have and the information we need, we need to first be able to understand the terminology of the water management domain, including where the same terminology has varying interpretations across organizational boundaries among the stakholders

New Mexico Environment Department (NMED)
The New Mexico Environment Department is a state government agency responsible for "protecting and restoring the environment of the state of New Mexico to foster a healthy and prosperous New Mexico for present and future generations.
Office of State Engineer (OSE)
The Office of the State Engineer is charged with administering the state's water resources. The State Engineer has authority over the supervision, measurement, appropriation, and distribution of all surface and groundwater in New Mexico, including streams and rivers that cross state boundaries.
The OSE is responsible for regulating the construction and abandonment of wells and the licensing of well drillers in the state of New Mexico
Piezometer
A piezometer is either a device used to measure liquid pressure in a system by measuring the height to which a column of the liquid rises against gravity, or a device which measures the pressure (more precisely, the piezometric head) of groundwater [1] at a specific point
Point Of Diversion (POD)
A specifically named place where water is removed from a body of water. The location of a surface water or groundwater extraction associated with a water right.
Produced Water
Produced water is a term used in the oil industry to describe water that is produced as a byproduct during the extraction of oil and natural gas.
Public Water System
An entity that provides water for human consumption through pipes or other constructed conveyances to at least 15 service connections or serves an average of at least 25 people for at least 60 days a year.
SDWIS (database)
an EPA federal database, that states work with to provide water quality data assurances for public supply.
Data are made publicly available through a viewer database called Drinking Water Watch. Example:
WATERS (database)
This is the INFORMIX database used by OSE to track points of diversion for water use, permitting, and water rights.
WATERs (Water Administration Technical Engineering Resource System) provides on-line access to OSE water right files including electronic images of water right documents and downloadable well reports, driller license reports, point of diversion reports and subdivision reports. The system also provides a UTM conversion tool.
